Abstract

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial
PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare endothelial cell changes in phacoemulsification and manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS) in patients with uncomplicated senile cataract.
METHODS: 152 patients with uncomplicated senile hard cataract were recruited after taking consent. Pre-operative and post-operative values of ECD and central corneal thickness (CCT) were measured and analyzed.
RESULTS: Patients were randomized into two groups- MSICS and Phacoemulsification. Following phacoemulsification, a threshold value of 2.86 mm of ACD was defined for minimal endothelial cell loss.
CONCLUSIONS: Both groups have similar postoperative vision. Greater ECD loss is associated with advanced age, hard nuclear cataract, and longer effective phacoemulsification time. ACD can be used as an essential parameter preoperatively to determine the choice of surgical technique.
