Abstract
STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, observational study.
PURPOSE: To evaluate and report causes for cataract surgery cancellation on the day of surgery and identify modifiable barriers to completion of the surgery on the scheduled date.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, observational study investigated cataract surgery cancellation rates was conducted for 6 months in department of ophthalmology, ASRAM Medical College. Chi-square and 2-sample t-tests were conducted for statistical analysis and p-value less than 0.05 were considered significant.
RESULTS: Total 625 cases were admitted for cataract surgery over a period of 6 months. The overall cancellation rate during the study period was 15.04% (n=94) and most common reason for cancellation was that pre-admission testing (PAT) was not completed in time for the surgery.
CONCLUSION: This study informs that proper preoperative evaluation, PAT (Pre-Admission Testing) will reduce the cancellation of cataract surgeries on the day of surgery.
