Abstract

‘Do-it-yourself’ concept-based Innovative Fundus Imaging System (DIY-IFIS) using 20D lens and trash can be mounted on any slit lamp like applanation tonometer to quickly click pictures as well as shoot video of the retinal pathologies.

It is a prospective study of 4726 patients, to determine efficacy of DIY-IFIS, in which number of referrals and time to evaluate a patient were considered before and after this innovation. 279 cases were found to have diverse retinal pathologies. Out of which 150 diagnosed in the first 3months with an indirect ophthalmoscope(IO) and 129 were diagnosed with DIY-IFIS in the next 3months. Tertiary centre referrals were reduced from 56(37.33%) to 18(13.95%) by teleophthalmology. Mean time to click retinal picture was 40±8.5 sec which was comparable to IO evaluation of fundus(45±6.5 sec)

The DIY-IFIS is a low-cost, speedy, convenient and portable device. Its use tremendously decreases unnecessary referrals to higher centers with high diagnostic accuracy.
