Abstract
Study design-Case series
Purpose-To study endothelial cell changes in patients with toxic endothelitis caused by Calotropis latex using specular microscopy(SPM)
Method-15 consecutive patients who presented with diminution of vision following exposure to Calotropis latex were evaluated.Detailed history taken and ocular examination(BCVA,SLE,IOP)done.SPM done on day 1,day7 and 1month.Fellow eye was taken as control
Result-All the patients presented within 24hrs of exposure had BCVA range 6/12 to CF,corneal edema with descement membrane folds.SPM parameters(CD,SD,6A)couldn't be accessed except CCT which was found to be in higher range.Within 3-7days of treatment with topical steroid, complete resolution occured.Specular microscopy parameters were also within normal limits
Conclusion-Early presentation(<24hrs)and intervention can prevent this significant ocular morbidity caused by Calotropis latex.Specular microscopy parameters were found to be within normal limits within 1 week of treatment
