Abstract
Cysts of conjunctival epithelium can be congenital or acquired.
•Most acquired cysts of conjunctiva are derived from an inclusion of conjunctival epithelium into the stroma.
•As nests of epithelial cells proliferate, a central cavity forms lined by nonkeratinized conjunctival epithelium.
•The central cavity is filled with clear fluid.
•Conjunctival cysts may also form from ductal epithelium of the accessory lacrimal glands and are lined by a double layer of epithelium.
•Stimuli for cyst formation include chronic inflammation, trauma, and surgery.
