Abstract
Study Design – Prospective interventional Case series
Purpose – To Evaluate the role intrastromal voriconazole in deep stromal fungal keratitis not amenable to medical therapy
Methods – All cases of fungal keratitis that were diagnosed with smears or cultures were included in the study. All cases received maximal medical therapy for a period of 2 weeks and 4 cases that still had non healing deep stromal infiltrates were given intrastromal voriconazole injections. Depending upon the severity patients required multiple injections sequentially. patients were followed up every 5 days and healing was documented with serial slit lamp imaging.
Results – All the 4 patients healed well with decreasing infiltrate size and eventual scarring with improvement in best corrected visual acuity.
Conclusion – Intrastromal voriconazole has an apparent beneficial role in deep stromal fungal keratitis and when given at appropriate time can evade the need for therapeutic keratoplasty.
