Abstract
INTRODUCTION-Isotretinoin, a systemic medication, commonly prescribed for the treatment of severe acne, has been associated with various systemic and ocular side effects including dry eyes. Studies have revealed that they impair the secretory function of meibomian gland via the PPARγ signaling pathway.
AIM-Association of dry eyes in patients on oral isotretinoin therapy.
METHOD-A prospective longitudinal study, including 50 patients between age group 18 to 40 years with severe nodulocystic acne. They were evaluated on the basis of OSDI Scores, Schirmer test, TBUT and Slit lamp examination. The baseline TBUT was 13.42±3.08 sec and Schirmer was 17.02±4.68 mm.
RESULTS-At the end of 3 months of oral isotretinoin use, the TBUT reduced to 9.86±3.36 sec and Schirmer values to 11.50±3.96 mm. On follow up after cessation, TBUT reverted to 11.67±4.05 and Schirmer to 12.65±3.84. Thus, my study revealed significant affection of dry eye parameters in patients on oral isotretinoin therapy.
