Abstract
Study design: Prospective observational study
Purpose: Some of the latex plants are toxic and may elicit different pathogenic mechanisms and different clinical manifestations in human eyes.
Methods:
Study period:6 months
Sample size:32 patients
Exclusion criteria: with pre-existing corneal pathology /opacity
History and examination of the patient and follow-up was done after 48 hrs,1 and 2 weeks.
Results: Out of 32 patients, 20males, 12females. 13 patients came with exposure of calatropis sap, 18 with Euphorbiaceae, 1 with Mango plant extract. 28 were exposed while doing agricultural work, 4 while plucking flowers from calatropis. All presented with burning and irritation of eyes, reduced vision. Eyelid edema(29%), conjunctival chemosis(12%) and congestion(100%), corneal abrasion(6%) ,epithelial defect(6%), corneal edema with descemets folds(61%).
Conclusion: Calotropis species latex causes more ocular signs than Euphorbia species
