Abstract
Purpose: To compare Supine positioning to Prone positioning in fresh rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs) treated with vitrectomy with gas tamponade.
Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial conducted at a tertiary centre. Seventy two patients were recruited, of which all had RRD and underwent standard 25g pars plana vitrectomy. 37 patients were allotted supine positioning in the post operative period, and 35 were allotted prone positioning. They were instructed to maintain positioning for a period of 7days. Cases were evaluated for reattachment rates, Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA), Intaocular pressure (IOP), and rates of cataractogenesis.
Results: Both the groups had similar demographics, and no significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of extent of Retinal Detachment, position of break, and PVR grade. The anatomical success after single surgery was 97.3% in Group A and 94.3% in Group B (p=0.609).
