Abstract

Study design – Single centric interventional hospital based study
Purpose- We plan to report a case of intumescent cataract in nanophthalmos and its management. Incidence of nanophthalmos is 1 in 10000.
Methods- 32 year male presented with diminution of vision in right eye (RE)since 2months. Visual acuity of RE was hand movement close to face and left eye (LE) was 6/6. Anterior segment of RE showed intumescent cataract with shallow AC whereas LE was within normal limits. Axial length of RE was 16.41mm and LE was 16.99mm. The right eye operated for phacoemusification with foldable PCIOL(+32D) under local anaesthesia.
Result- Post cataract surgery the vision in RE improved to 6/18. Postoperative period was uneventful.
Conclusion- Nanophthalmos is a rare genetic disease characterised by small eye secondary to compromised growth. Cataract surgery in such eyes hold more risks and complications for which the patient should be counselled and apt precautions needs to be taken.
