Abstract
VKC, seen mainly in young children is an underrecognized disease which often has a substantial consequence on a child’s life. PURPOSE: To compare the result of loteprednol (LE) alone vs loteprednol and ectoine (EC)eyedrop in treatment of moderate to severe VKC. METHODS: Prospective case control analysis of 40 patients in a tertiary healthcare (<15yr)divided into 2 groups (One with LE and another with LE+EC).Main criteria of evaluation-signs (conjunctival hyperemia, presence of papilla (palpebral),Horner Tranta spots, presence of shield ulcer),TBUT,Modified Bonini grade. Improvement in symptoms like pain ,photophobia, itching and foreign body sensation were recorded. RESULTS: Both groups showed significant(p<0.05) improvements in signs, but the group with added EC eyedrops showed statistically significant (p<0.05)improvement in symptoms and was well tolerated. CONCLUSION:EC eye drop as an add on to LE is a superior option as it has better clinical outcome.
