Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of the paper was to investigate various causes of low vision and blindness and to desegregate the necessary VR services needed
Study design- Retrospective
Methods: A review of electronic records for the past two years of patients attending VR clinic was done and analyzed further descriptively.
Results: In total, 1723 patients, predominantly male (71.2%), visited the LVR clinic from 2018 to 2019. 58.6% – 16 to 49 years, 25.6% – 0 to 15 years group. 64% were from outside Delhi. Retinal disorders – 63.5% of cases. Retinitis pigmentosa (15.2%), and Rod-Cone Dystrophy (4.7%) were the most frequent causes. In younger age groups, the most common cause was congenital disorders. 36.0% of patients were <1/60 blindness, 16.6% of them fell ≥ 1/60 blindness. 17.1% would benefit from large print materials (near vision N18 to 12).
Conclusion: Early detection, timely management will prevent a significant proportion of patients from developing low vision and blindness.
