Abstract
Study design: Hospital based descriptive study
Purpose: To identify various causes of blindness among paediatric patients seeking visual disability certificate
Methods : sample size – 50
Inclusion criteria: paediatric patients <12 years attending ophthalmology opd.
Exclusion criteria: child with temporary causes of visual impairment. Age above 12 years
Results : In our study retinitis pigmentosa, congenital anomalies, optic atrophy were leading causes of visual impairment in paediatric age group.
congenital anomalies -26% (13 patients 26 eyes) out of which 61.5% were microphthalmos with microcornea, others include uveal Coloboma 30.8% and anophthalmos 7.7%.
Conclusion: results in the study have shown a high number of congenital anomalies and retinitis pigmentosa which explains necessity of genetic counselling
