Abstract
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study.
PURPOSE: Reporting a series of cases of AACE due to intracranial pathology diagnosed on neuroimaging.
METHODS: 23 patients of AACE (13M and 10F; mean age 16.6 y) studied between May 22 and April 23, included Burian Fraceschetti type (n=1), Beilschowsky type (n=4), intracranial pathology (n=5) and 13 idiopathic. All underwent contrast enhanced MRI of the brain. 2 female had tuberculous meningitis, 2 had idiopathic intracranial hypertension and a 5/M child child had supra sellar craniopharyngioma as the cause of AACE.
RESULTS: 5/23 (21.73%)cases of AACE had an underlying intracranial pathology as the etiology diagnosed on neuroimaging.
CONCLUSION: Routine neuroimaging should be done in all cases of AACE, especially those with unidentified etiology and those that present with subtle neurological signs.
