Abstract

In this randomized prospective comparative interventional study, we aimed to analyse the rates of capsular extension in two techniques of two staged Capsulorhexis- Capsulo-Tomy rhexis & Mini rhexis. It included a total of 120 patients who underwent phacoemulsification surgery for intumescent cataracts. These patients were randomized between 4 surgeons, 2 senior & 2 junior surgeons with 30 cases each, 15 underwent Tomy rhexis & 15 underwent mini rhexis each. Out of all the patients, 6 patients (5%) had rhexis extension, 2 of which were with capsulotomy rhexis & 4 with mini rhexis. All patients with rhexis extension had shallow ACD of less than 3 mm. One patient who underwent mini rhexis had an Argentinian flag sign. The average time duration taken for capsulotomy rhexis was 1.24 min & 2 min in patients who underwent mini rhexis among senior surgeons. Junior surgeons had an average duration of 2.26 min & 2.40 mins in capsulotomy and mini rhexis respectively. No complications were noted.
