Abstract
Purpose : To find the cause of dry eyes in thyroid disorders. METHOD: 30 patients each of thyroid disorder without eye signs, with eye signs(TED) and controls were evaluated for subjective and objective parameters of dry eyes including OSDI score, TBUT, impression cytology and tear ferning. RESULTS- Thyroid disorder, irrespective of eye signs, showed a significant correlation with Schirmer I test, BST & TBUT. Between TED & without eye signs, only impression cytology was significantly different. Both TED & without eye signs individually differed significantly in Schirmer I test, BST & TBUT from controls
CONCLUSION: Patients of thyroid disorder had higher prevalence of dry eye compared to controls. Both evaporative and aqueous deficiency dry eye contribute to the pathogenesis. We also found that patients with TED had significantly more abnormal impression cytology indicating that ocular inflammation can play a major role such patients as compared to those without eye signs.
