Abstract
prospective interventional double blinded randomised control study of 40 patients undergoing cataract surgery. To estimate risk, incidence of OCULOCARDIAC REFLEX(OCR) and compare the outcomes of prophylactic atropine versus perioperative lignocaine local administration.40 patients were randomly allocated into two groups (prophylactically atropinised and perioperative lignocaine )and incidence of decrease in the heart rate below 20 % baseline for a duration of 10-15 seconds was noted .All the patients whether prophylactically treated or not , depending upon their drop in heart rate were managed conservatively and local injection of lignocaine.Routine prophylaxis with atropine still developed bradycardia(2.1%) and other cardiac complications(3.09%) than perioperative lignocaine injection which effectively stabilised heart rate . Atropine is not essential as routine premedication, local anesthesia with lignocaine significantly decreases OCR.
