Abstract
INTRODUCTION:In India, myopia prevalence=4.5-9%.Developmental mismatch causing high axial length(AXL)in youth causing visual disability by retinal problems.Recent studies-82%of myopes(-0.75D to-2.75D) have 40-50nmol/L vitD,18% of myopes have >50nmol/L VitD. For 25nmol/L vitD increase, risk of myopia decreases by 65%
AIM:To evaluate association between vitD&myopia in 7±1yrs children, time spent outdoors is considered
MATERIALS-METHODS:Cross sectional study.100 Subjects from nearby schools of Kandukur during DRP.Informed consent-parents
History,ocular examination;visual acuity,AXL,cycloplegic AR,serum Vit D levels&questionnaire for time spent in&outdoors
RESULTS:In a study of 100children,increased AXL& -0.5 to -2.75D myopia in 78% of myopes with VitD levels <35nmol/L & 22% of myopes have >50nmol/L
Spent less time outdoor than their peers
CONCLUSION:Independent of outdoor time,VitD levels inversely related to AXL playing major role in eyeball growth,to be studied further with more subjects
