Abstract
Facial disfigurement following eye removal causes several mental and social problems affecting quality of life. Rehabilitation is crucial in such patients.
In this prospective five year study, demographic attributes were evaluated by modified Kuppuswamy socioeconomic scale along with self reported five levels of satisfaction, in patients who underwent enucleation or evisceration and rehabilitated by custom-made ocular prosthesis(COP).
18 patients underwent primary COP while 23 underwent secondary COP rehabilitation. Most common reason for removal was irreparable trauma in both. Mean time duration between surgery and COP was 6.9±0.8 weeks in primary and 6.8 ± 6.7 years in the secondary COP. 51.2% COP patients were from Kuppuswamy Class III. 63.2% were ‘very satisfied’ followed by 14.6% who were ‘satisfied’ with COP results.
Rehabilitation of ocular disfigurement results in a noteworthy improvement in esthetics contributing enormously to recover confidence and selfesteem.
