Abstract
ABSTRACT-Dry eye disease in glaucoma patients is due to the possible role of preservatives mainly benzalkonium chloride which causes alterations in the ocular surface.AIM-To evaluate role of preservatives in dry eye disease in glaucoma.
MATERIAL& METHODS-A prospective hospital based study on topically treated glaucoma patients attending tertiary care centre in Jharkhand.19 patients were evaluated ,11 male&8 female between the age group of 45-70years.The study was conducted between December 2022-June 2023.Dry eye evaluation was done using Tear meniscus height(TMH), Schirmer 1 ,Schirmer 2, Tear film breakup time(TBUT)tests. RESULTS-Out of 19 patients,14(73.3%)had abnormal TMH in RE &12(63.15%)in LE.16(84.3%)had abnormal Schirmer 1 in RE &14(73.3%)in LE.15(78.8%)had abnormal Schirmer 2 in RE &13(68.5%)in LE.16(84.2%)had abnormal TBUT in RE &15(78.8%)in LE. CONCLUSION- Patients on topical antiglaucoma medications with preservatives are more prone to develop dry eye.
