Abstract
Study design: Prospective observational study on 60 VKC patients of 1 year duration. Purpose: To evaluate frequency & epidemiology of VKC. Methods: Medical records, signs and symptoms, treatment details evaluated. All clinical data collected & statistically examined. Results: Mean age was 12.9 ± 5.9. 65% cases under 14 years of age. M:F= 2.5:1. 50% had systemic allergic diseases. The limbal form (55%) was most frequent. 10% showed a severe form. At the first visit patients were treated with: topical antihistaminic eye drops (60%), topical corticosteroids alone (1.6%) or in association (26.6% of cases). Systemic antihistamine used by 25%. 33.3% cases required two or more visits per year for exacerbations of their symptoms. Conclusion: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis is a ocular condition that mainly affects young males. VKC has different clinical features and therapeutic responses, suggesting the need for a standardized therapeutic approach on the basis of a grading of disease severity.
