Abstract
Study Design: This study utilised a comprehensive approach to assess barriers in eye health programs for underserved communities.
Purpose: Identify barriers and propose strategies to enhance effectiveness of eye health programs in underserved communities.
Methods: Surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions with stakeholders and community members were conducted to assess program accessibility, affordability, awareness, cultural considerations, and healthcare infrastructure.
Results: Significant barriers included limited resources, lack of awareness (about 80%), cultural beliefs, inadequate infrastructure, and difficulties in reaching remote areas. These impacted program uptake, adherence, and sustainability.
Conclusion: Strategies were proposed to address barriers include increasing awareness, community-based outreach, targeted education of population, partnerships with local organisations, tele-ophthalmology, and advocating for policy changes to improve healthcare infrastructure.
