Abstract
STUDY DESIGN:Hospital based observational study.PUPRPOSE:To shed light to ascertain the importance of eye examinations and the prevalence of eye diseases in rural and tribal areas.METHODS:A population based hospital based study was conducted in which 154 patients were sampled from rural and a Tribal area in Narsipatnam in Vishakhapatnam district, South India.Ophthalmic cases were selected from general OPD, for the comprehensive eye Examination to screen various ocular disorder.VisualAcuity was assessed using a tumbling E chart and cases screened under slit lamp and fundus examination with 78D lens were performed by post graduate resident. Of the 154 patients 114(74.02%) were from rural areas and 40(25.97%) from tribal area.RESULTS:The results obtained are as follows,the most common cause was Cataract (34.41%), Refractive Errors (26.62%), conjunctival diseases(12.33% ), retinal diseases ( 8.14%) , glaucoma (7.14%) , corneal diseases (6.49%), other causes (4.54).
