Abstract
Study design:retrospective analysis of consecutive cases of PIH
Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of management in periocular infantile hemangioma (PIH).
Methods: A retrospective analysis of consecutive cases of PIH managed with low-dose oral propranolol (LDOP) (1 mg/kg BW), standard dose oral propranolol (SDOP) (2 mg/kg BW) and intralesional triamcinolone (ILTA) (4mg/kg BW).
Results: Mean age was 9.8+13.2m (range 2-48m) with female predominance (70 %). Of 22 eyes, 9 (45%) received LDOP, 3 (15%) SDOP and 4 (20%) ILTA as primary treatment. Complete or clinically significant partial resolution was seen in 13 (81%) overall; 6 (66%) in LDOP and 100% in SDOP and 100% ILTA with a mean time to resolution of 5.1, 2.3 and 5.8m respectively. One needed surgery for ptosis covering the visual axis.
Conclusion: LDOP is least effective in the management of PIH. The child can be triaged to LDOP, SDOP or ILTA based on the size of the tumor, risk of amblyopia and need for rapid response.
