Abstract
Methods:Retrospective review of patients with lactation optic neuritis seen at our institute from Jan1,2016 to July 31,2022.
Results:38 eyes of 25 patients (mean age: 22.48 years) were enrolled. Mean follow up- 12.04 months. 16/25 had symptom onset within 3 months postpartum.13/25 presented bilaterally.Associated symptoms – ocular pain 11, headache 7, limb weakness 3, and ataxia in 1 patient. 14 patients had long segment optic nerve enhancement, 3 had chiasmal involvement. None had brain involvement. 2 patients were MOG positive and 1 patient was NMO positive.All patients were treated with IV methylprednisolone and 5 with immunosuppressive agents.At presentation 27/28 eyes had papillitis. Median VA improved from 1.8 log units (0-3.3) at presentation to 0 log units (0-2.8)
Median VF MD improved from -9.82 dB (-5.26 to -33.62) to -3.87 dB (-0.38 to -30.38).
Conclusion:Majority patients had features suggestive of typical optic neuritis, had first episode, and only few were seropositive.
