Abstract
Study Design:Retrospective study
Purpose: To report clinical profile, diagnostic challenges, and outcomes in cases of Orbital Apex Syndrome.
Methods: Retrospective review of records of patients with Orbital Apex Syndrome seen from October 1, 2018 to June 30, 2022 with details about symptoms, optic disc examination, perimetry and neuroimaging findings.
Results: 52 patients with Orbital Apex Syndrome were identified.Presenting complaints were blurred vision in 40(76.92%), periocular pain in 30(57.69%), ptosis 30(57.69%), diplopia in 16(30.76%) and proptosis in 14 (26.92%). At presentation, 46 patients had associated motility restriction. Optic disc findings were: normal -31 (59.61%), diffuse disc edema in 3 (5.76%) and optic atrophy in 16(30.76%) patients. Granulomatous etiology was the most common implicated cause.
Conclusion: In our series, Orbital Apex Syndrome most commonly presented with diffuse ophthalmoplegia and granulomatous etiologies were most common.
