Abstract
Aim-To study & compare the efficacy of macular grid laser & intravitreal Ranibizumab injection on visual acuity & central macular thickness(CMT) of DME patients Methods-84 eyes with DME were randomly assigned to receive either injection ranibizumab(Day 0 & monthly injections) or laser treatment(Day 0). None of the patients received any further laser treatment for the study duration. They were followed up at 1, 2 & 3 months. BCVA & CMT (OCT based) were primary outcome measures.
Results-The mean improvement in BCVA, with benefits observed as early as 3 months, was significantly(p=0.02) superior with Ranibizumab(0.31±0.13 logMar) when compared to laser(0.20 ± 0.12 logMar). The mean change in CMT from baseline to 3 months was also more in ranibizumab group(455±82 to 300.7±46 ) than in laser group(387.5±92 to 318.25±46) & difference was statistically significant(p=0.01)
Conclusion- Intravitreal injection of Ranibizumab appears to be more effective in improving BCVA and reducing CMT in DME
